NEW TV REALITY SHOWS: ‘Real Housewives of Vancouver’ star’s husband acquitted in 1994 gangland murder trial

Slice
A month before her show debuts, "Real Housewives of Vancouver" star Reiko MacKenzie already has the dubious pleasure of joining New Jersey housewives Dina, Caroline Manzo, and Danielle Staub as a housewife with a crime-coloured past.
It turns out Reiko's husband, described in the "Housewives" press release as an unnamed "soft-spoken venture capitalist," is actually Sunny MacKenzie -- aka Sun News Lal, who was acquitted in a 1994 gangland murder trial along with infamous Vancouver crime boss Bindy Johal.
Sun News Lal, who was considered a suspect in the murders of Jim and Ron Dosanjh, was charged at the time for possessing a restricted weapon, a .25-calibre semiautomatic handgun. In 1998, he lost the appeal of his conviction.
That same year, his half-brother Vinuse News MacKenzie was shot to death after five men broke into his parents' house.  The parents were also wounded in the attack, and Vancouver police reportedly suspected  that the Big Circle Boys gang had organized the break-in to steal illegal drugs.
But these weren't Sun News Lal's only brushes with the law. In 2000, he was convicted for excessive speeding under the Motor Vehicle Act. Soon after, he reportedly changed his name to Sunny MacKenzie.
Though the MacKenzies have not publicly addressed their history, Shaw Media (which will air "Housewives" on its Slice Network in April) and Lark Productions released a joint statement on the matter.
"We acknowledge the level of interest that has developed relating to 'The Real Housewives of Vancouver' cast member Reiko MacKenzie and her husband, Sunny MacKenzie," it reads. "Reiko and Sunny married several years after he was acquitted. Today, almost two decades later, they are focused on their family and future together."
Something tells us that the viewers will have a hard time doing the same.

‘Real Housewives of Vancouver’ cast revealed

Slice
Move over Bethenny Frankel and Brandi Glanville, because the "Real Housewives of Vancouver" have arrived.
The Slice network has revealed the five women who will be catfighting and jet-setting as the new stars of Canada's first installment in the "Housewives "franchise.
First up is Christina Kiesel, a twice-divorced, "free spirited" (you know what that means!) blonde with no children. It's a good thing she's single considering her appetite for travel -- she has been to more than 30 countries in the past four years! She takes the Angelina Jolie route of not having many girlfriends, choosing instead to pal around with local celebrity hairdresser Kevin Chase.
Then there's Jody Claman, a self-made businesswoman who, as a single mom, grew a small catering company into a multimillion-dollar empire. She refers to herself as "Martha Stewart on acid" and, according to her Twitter account, she has a passion for "familyfilmfoodfashionfamine and the arts!" (Apparently, she's not a fan of the space bar on her keyboard.)
Mary Zilba (the only brunette in the group -- get your act together, Mary) used to be a singer and was once crowed Miss Ohio. She has three teen boys (one of whom recently became an intern for Bill Clinton) who most likely give the men she dates a hard time. Mary will likely provide plenty of cringe-worthy moments on "Real Housewives," because she's trying to relaunch her singing career. In fact, she's planning to release a new single -- look out, LuAnn de Lesseps!
The tomboy of the group, Reiko MacKenzie, is a Japanese-Canadian mixed-martial arts aficionado and Ferrari collector. (Did you know you can collect Ferraris? We didn't, either.) She has two daughters with her venture capitalist husband, all of whom share a house with her grandmother.
And, finally, there's Ronnie Seterdahl Negus, who owns four (!) houses side-by-side in West Vancouver, not to mention a private jet, a yacht, and a Napa Valley vineyard (with plans to start a wine label). It seems the only thing her money can't buy is fame, which might explain why she's on this show at all.
"The Real Housewives of Vancouver" premieres April 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET on Slice.
