MONTREAL — Montreal filmmaker Kim Nguyen’s child-soldier drama Rebelle (War Witch) has been named Canada’s selection for best foreign-language Oscar.
Telefilm Canada says it’s confident the harrowing French-language feature “will win over the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”
Rebelle stars newcomer Rachel Mwanza as a teen who is forced to fight with, and become a sex slave for, a rebel commander in sub-Saharan Africa.
The film is one of 65 that will initially be submitted for consideration before a long list is announced by the academy.
Canadian films have made the final Oscar short list for the last two years: Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar made the cut last year while Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies did the year prior.
The 85th Academy Awards will be handed out on Feb. 24.
“After 10 years in development and a production marked by many adventures that have provided me with everlasting memories of the Congo and its people, this recognition warms my heart,” Nguyen said in a statement.
“It was truly a team effort and this recognition is sincerely shared with everyone who worked on this film, from the writing, to the creation and production, as well as with all our financial partners who believed in us despite the risks.”

TIFF 2012 HOT CELEBRITIES: Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart's halo and controversy
"They were so excited to meet each other," a source told People. "After being introduced, Kristen and Jennifer were soon chatting like old pals."

Lawrence's co-star Bradley Cooper reportedly joined the duo on Saturday before they invited Stewart, who is still in town after making her first post-scandal appearance on the "On the Road" red carpet last week, to their film's premiere party at Soho House Saturday night. Though Stewart was not photographed at the event (maybe she didn't want to hear any more expletives), Lawrence was caught reuniting with her "Hunger Games" co-star Woody Harrelson, who is in town for "Seven Psychopaths."

Earlier on in the evening, Lawrence was virtually unrecognizable at the premiere for her new film, in which she plays a troubled girl who befriends an older man (Cooper) who has just been released from a mental institution. Lawrence went for an uncharacteristically severe look, turning her normally carefree blonde waves into super-straight brunette locks that she paired with a very high-fashion Christian Dior Couture gown.
Come to think of it, Lawrence's look was pretty similar to Stewart's Zuhair Murad look at the "On the Road" premiere on Thursday. Maybe they shared fashion tips as well as gossip!

TIFF 2012: Kristen Stewart looked ravishing and delightful at last night’s TIFF premiere of On the Road. Sadly, getting back on the red carpet horse (that makes no sense) does not guarantee that there will be no more fall-out from the whole scandalous cheating thingy
Kristen Stewart looked ravishing and delightful at last night’s TIFF premiere of On the Road.
Sadly, getting back on the red carpet horse (that makes no sense) does not guarantee that there will be no more fall-out from the whole scandalous cheating thingy. Or that things Kristen told a writer for British Vogue months ago won’t come back to bite her in the derriere.
According to isubscribe, writer Christa D’Souza went back and listened to her interview tapes after learning of the affair, and found this nugget of awesome:
"My God, I'm so in love with my boyfriend. I wish he were here now. I think I want to have his babies. I love the way he smells. And him me. Like, he loves to lick under my armpits."
We must assume the boyfriend mentioned is Robert Pattinson and not Rubert McMarriedGuy.
So sad. It’s one thing to have a broken heart because of a terrible mistake one made in public view instead of indoors like normal people, it’s another to be used to having someone lick your pits and then, all of a sudden, have no one.

TIFF 2012 MOVIE BIBLE: Dust
Dust
In a small Guatemalan village where many "disappeared" during the country's civil war, a troubled young man struggles with the memory of his murdered father — and the nearby presence of the man who turned his father in.
SINOPSIS
SINOPSIS
Polvo (Dust) tells a personal story that is taking place while its main characters produce a documentary on the Guatemalan Civil War.
Ignacio is thirty years old and father to a girl of ten. Being such a young father produces in him plenty of fear and doubts about the family. Separated from his daughter’s mother, he has remade his life with Alejandra, with whom he is expecting a baby. Ignacio and Alejandra are very excited by the news, but both fear the ghosts of previous relationships.
While they try to come to terms with their circumstances, they produce a documentary on women who are looking for their husbands and fathers; men that were disappeared in 1982 during the armed conflict in an indigenous village of Guatemala.
Amongst the families of the disappeared, they meet Delfina and Juan, mother and son. Juan is almost the same age as Ignacio, and both have a distant relationship with their respective mothers.
Sixteen years after the disappearance of her husband, Delfina is still hopeful of finding him. Juan though is fed up of the search and is jealous of the figure of his father. He tries to forget what happened, but cannot. He knows who was responsible for the disappearance of his father and many others too. It is someone who still lives in the same village.
The story focuses on daily goings-on and how they become more aware by what they see and hear during the recording of the documentary. The revenge has a strong presence.DUST TECHNICAL SHEET

TIFF 2012: Jennifer Lawrence at ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ premiere
TIFF 2012: Jennifer Lawrence at ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ premiere
By now, Jennifer Lawrence is a pretty familiar face. She was around the Toronto International Film Festival last year for the romance "Like Crazy," made a huge impression at the Oscars with 2010's "Winter's Bone," and let's not forget the little novel-to-movie franchise that is "The Hunger Games." Yup, you know who we're talking about.

So it must take quite a dramatic look for us not to recognize her, right? Well, at the TIFF 2012 premiere of her new film "The Silver Linings Playbook," in which she plays a troubled girl who befriends a similarly-troubled man (Bradley Cooper), Lawrence debuted a dark, dramatic, high-fashion look that had us doing a double take.

The actress' deep-hued strapless Christian Dior Haute Couture gown was definitely high fashion, looking more like a piece of art than a piece of clothing. On its own, it could easily be the star of the film, overshadowing Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, and even Lawrence herself! But the biggest shock was her stick-straight, chocolate locks, which she had to dye for the upcoming "Hunger Games" sequel, "Catching Fire." Forgive us for being taken by surprise!

It's the complete opposite of the beachy, sandy-blonde waves that she rocked so well until very recently. Coupled with heavy dark pink lips, the down-to-earth star looked uncharacteristically severe.
What do you think of Jennifer Lawrence's dramatic TIFF look?

TIFF 2012 HOT CELEBRITIES: Kirsten Stewart got an outpouring of support at her first post-scandal appearance, but not everyone was happy to see her
Kirsten Stewart got an outpouring of support at her first post-scandal appearance, but not everyone was happy to see her.
The 22-year-old actress, who appeared at the "On the Road" red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival, was surprisingly poised, posing gamely for the cameras, smiling at reporters and spending more time than any of the other cast members (Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund) signing autographs and posing for photos with fans.
"I'm really happy [the fans] are here," she told the Toronto Sun. "I think most of them were fans before I had anything to do with this. It's awesome."

And it's probably a good thing Stewart, who donned a sparkling floral Zuhair Murad gown, was so busy completing her interview duties. According to the Toronto Sun, at one point during Thursday night's premiere gala, one angry onlooker yelled out, "Kristen, you little b----!"
Though the comment reportedly caused tension on the red carpet, it could not be heard further down the line, and there was no sign that Stewart herself was aware of what happened. In any case, supportive fans' loud yells of "We love you, Kristen!" likely drowned it out.

And even if Stewart had heard it? Well, one fan brought a poster that offered a worthy response. The main image in a group of photos was a vampy Stewart flipping the bird, surrounded by the words, "We love and support you, keep being true to yourself."
Stewart already set the media abuzz Wednesday night when she arrived in Toronto wearing what appeared to be one of Robert Pattinson's old shirts (he wore the same one while walking his dog in July last year).

While she walked the "On the Road" gauntlet, the actress' rumoured ex-boyfriend was at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) Thursday night to present an exclusive clip from "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," the final film in their "Twilight" series.
"It's been an amazing journey and we'd like to thank all the fans of the series for your incredible enthusiasm from the beginning until now, the finale chapter," Pattinson said.
VMAs host Kevin Hart even addressed Stewart's two-month-old affair with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders in which she was photographed making out with the married Brit.
"If she did it, so what? It's over. Move on!" Hart said. "The point I'm making is this: if you've made a mistake, so what? I'm going to make mistakes [tonight]. You know why? Because people here have made mistakes before."
THE CELEBRITY SPEECH:
"Dude, I'm really happy that [the fans] are here for 'On the Road.' I think most of them were fans before I had anything to do with ['Twilight'], which is why they're here anyways, so it's awesome."
