PRESS QUOTES
“Somewhat different to his previous work, a film that shows Stoll as a
director and scriptwriter who has the ability to surprise audiences and
renew himself”
Matías Castro, El País
“The three leading actors own their scenes and deliver serious
performances. For those skeptical of Humberto de Vargas: he rules”
Clara Esmoris, El Observador
“A model kit with no instructions on the back of the box, one in which
you can see a gentle film or an obscure drama”
Agustín Acevedo Kanopa, La Diaria
“Grass sods unevenly patched over a grave in a cemetery, plants that
are removed from pots into a better place that no one knows why it
could be better, the girl’s apathy when masturbating an occasional
boyfriend, the father's current partner who is never seen in images,
are all subtle observations, of cinematographic wisdom at times (...)
Those moments confirm Stoll as one of the most skilled Uruguayan
filmmakers today”
Manuel Martínez Carril, Brecha
MAIN CHARACTERS

DIRECTOR
Pablo Stoll Ward
Born in 1974 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Together with Juan Pablo Rebella he scripted and
directed
25 Watts (2001) and Whisky (2004). Both films received several international
awards and were commercially released worldwide. During 2006 and 2007, Stoll was
scriptwriter, director and occasional actor in the news satire show
Los Informantes, aired
for two seasons on Montevideo’s Channel 4. He has also directed several video clips and
short documentaries for television. He is a founding partner at Control Z Films, the
production company for his own films and where he has produced also
La Perrera (2006),
Acné
(2008) and Gigante (2009). In 2009 he directed Hiroshima, his first solo feature film,
which was chosen for Toronto, Rotterdam, Jeonju, Mar del Plata and Jerusalem among
other international film festivals.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
“In 2006 we began to write this story with Juan Pablo Rebella and Gonzalo Delgado: a
dramatic comedy about the three members of a nuclear, disfunctional family. A kind of
bourgeois family, from a middle-class neighborhood in Montevideo. Perhaps what one
would call a typical family.
Six months later, Juan Pablo decided to put an end to his life. For the next two years, the
story of this family was left in a drawer, but it never went out of my head. Eventually, the
story made its way out and I wrote it in one go.
3
is a film about egoism and the search of redemption. About coming of age and those
moments in life when, even without us noticing, our personality takes shape. It's a story
about second chances and the fear they arouse: fear of failure.
The balance posed by the family in
3 is unlikely, but possible. A place that may be a bit
untrue but nevertheless safe. In
3 the characters are found in a moment of passage, in a
constant and rhythmic movement that will lead to a final encounter.
The film follows that movement, goes along with the characters and lives those moments
with them. This is expressed in sequence shots that unveil each character's environment,
which is also marked by a special sound treatment for their particular moments.
The music characters listen to defines as well this time of their lives. Ana moves in a spiral
from pop to rock, Rodolfo recovers the pleasure of listening to his old vinyl records he had
left at his former home, while Graciela finds a new love and a sort of second youth.
Like in our other films there is humor and wonder towards the absurdity of quotidian life.
There are things not said that are however drained from the empty words of everyday
exchanges. There is music and this time some dancing too, that moment when we all
make fools of ourselves to the beat of the music.”
