7 Boxes

It's Friday night in Asunción and the temperature is 40ºC. Víctor, a 17-year-old wheelbarrow-boy, dreams of becoming famous and covets a cell phone in Mercado 4. He is offered the chance to deliver seven boxes with unknown contents in exchange for $100. This sounds like an easy job but it soon gets complicated. Something in the boxes is highly coveted. Víctor and his persecutors find themselves caught up in a crime they know nothing about. Starring Celso Franco, Lali González, Víctor Sosa and Nico García.

LOG LINE
A teenage delivery boy working in a Paraguayan market must dodge thieves, rival gangs and the
omnipresent police when he undertakes a dangerous contract to transport a load of mysterious — and
highly sought-after — crates to the edge of town.
SYNOPSIS
Putting a rarely seen Paraguay on the cinematic map,
7 Boxes brings an inventive, lo-fi ingenuity to
the traditional crime thriller. The setting is Asunción, a boiling urban hub that houses the infamous
"municipal marketplaces": chaotic mazes of commercial vendors’ stalls hawking everything from fruit,
vegetables and garments to pirated DVDs and cellphones.
One sweltering Friday night, seventeen-year-old wheelbarrow carter Victor (Celso Franco) becomes
captivated by a Hollywood crime film playing on a television at an electronics stall, and fantasizes
about finding fame and fortune on the big screen. Victor has dreamed about being a television and
film star his entire life. Growing up in the market, surrounded by DVD sellers and films playing
constantly, created a passion in him for movies and characters.
His biggest wish is for a camera cellphone that, he thinks, will help him launch his acting career; but
business is scarce and the competition among the barrowers is fierce. He thinks that having a cell
phone and filming himself and his life will be the closest to being a television star he will ever get.
However, Victor’s prayers suddenly seem to be answered when a mysterious man offers him a crisp
U.S. $100 bill for a seemingly simple task: transport seven boxes to an undisclosed location on the
outskirts of the market. Equipped with a borrowed cellphone to receive directions, and joined by a
hyperactive, wisecracking companion, Liz (Lali González), Victor begins to traverse the eight city
blocks. But what had appeared to be a straightforward job is beset with a series of obstacles: thieves,
rival gangs, and a painstaking, aggressive search being conducted by the omnipresent police. As the
night wears on, a terrified Victor realizes he may be a pawn in a dangerous game — and the contents
of those seven boxes may be more than he bargained for.

FILMMAKER’S COMMENTS
Directors Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori
Anywhere you look throughout the varied landscape of Paraguay, there is a wide range of stories
being told, both good and bad. One of the stories that we found fascinating is the life of the
wheelbarrow leaders in the Municipal Market Number 4 of Asunción, a market that covers almost 8
blocks in the heart of the city. When you look deeper into the labyrinth of this market, you find a vast
range of characters and visually stunning aesthetics that have never been reflected in our cinema.
In every market around the world, the common denominator is that everyone goes to buy goods there,
regardless of race, age, status or culture. “If you want to know what a town eats and how its people
live and behave, you should get to know its marketplace.” In 2004, we began visiting Market 4, and
immediately became fascinated by the place and its inhabitants. We began observing the
wheelbarrow leaders of the market and decided to trace the origins of the 7 CAJAS plot, and like a
Ñanduti fabric, each thread began to intertwine into a suspenseful story.
This project aims to reflect the reality of Paraguay, through images and characters that are part of our
culture, and by using not only Spanish , but our native South American language, Guaraní. We see
the market and its inhabitants, most of whom survive with almost nothing. They all have diverse
needs varying from saving money on food costs, finding the right medicine, paying an old debt, buying
tickets to a raffle they know they will win, to raising money for a birth or a funeral. “You pay to live and
to die as well.”
Our main character, Víctor, is a seventeen year old wheelbarrow leader, who one day decides he
wants to earn money not to eat, but to buy a cell phone with a camera. He knows that raising enough
money is almost impossible, but his dream of being famous and being on television is bigger, and he
knows that the camera phone is a good start. Even though Victor is poor, he is a joyful character with
a rather simple and naive view of life. His best friend, Liz, is curious, mischievous and hyperactive,
and joins him in the adventure. Víctor leads us through this story in less than 12 hours, where “he has
to carry “7 BOXES’ to earn money towards his goal. This challenge becomes a fascinating and
dangerous adventure.
7 BOXES is our way of cinematically paying homage to the great adventure movies of all time. In a
chase scene, instead of luxury cars chasing each other, there are wooden wheelbarrows everywhere.
We are very proud that this feature film was declared of Cultural Interest by the National Secretariat of
Culture and of Municipal Interest by the Board of the City of Asunción, and the Education Ministry also
awarded this film a special honor for its educational value.
For us as directors, 7 BOXES is more than our first feature, it is our commitment to continue with
something we are passionate about: Fiction. A commitment to get people to the movie theater, to get
the Paraguayan audiences – and international audiences - hooked on locally made movies and
wanting to see more of them.
