Stratford, Ont.’s favourite son arrives at Massey Hall tonight to tape the MuchMusic special Justin Bieber: Home for the Holidays, all but ensuring several hours of utter mayhem in the vicinity of Yonge and Shuter.
The (sorta-)homecoming performance — which sold out in 30 minutes flat on Sunday but airs before the general public tomorrow at 6 p.m. on MuchMusic and again on CTV at 7:30 — caps off another banner year for the teen-pop titan. But the Bieb hasn’t had a totally smooth ride in 2011. Here’s a look back at some of the ups and downs in the Bieber camp over the past 12 months.
LOWS
Feb. 13: Shut out at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where Esperanza Spalding steals the Best New Artist title and My World 2.0 loses Best Pop Vocal Album to Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster.
June 23: While promoting his new fragrance before a rowdy crowd of fans at Macy’s in New York City, Bieber mistakes an undercover cop rushing to his aid for a crazed, middle-aged attacker. His security detail wrestles the man to the ground and is briefly threatened with disorderly-conduct charges.
July 5: Early circulation figures show that Vanity Fair’s February issue featuring Bieber on the cover will be the magazine’s lowest-selling issue since Will Smith promoted the ill-fated Wild, Wild West on the front in 1999. “Who knew teens didn’t buy magazines?” says a Vanity Fair spokesperson.
Aug. 30: Bieber and his Ferrari are involved in a “very minor fender bender” in Los Angeles’s Studio City complex.
Nov. 2: Twenty-year-old Mariah Yeater files a complaint with Los Angeles court alleging that 17-year-old Bieber is the father of her three-month-old baby boy.
HIGHS
March 27: My World 2.0 takes Pop Album of the Year honours at the Juno Awards, while Bieber is predictably voted past Drake, Hedley, Michael Bublé and Sarah McLachlan for the Juno Fan Choice Award.
April 26: Bieber is honoured as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” at a gala in New York.
Aug. 15: People magazine names Bieber Hollywood’s richest teenager after he earns a reported $53 million in 2010. Miley Cyrus is next with $48 million.
Nov. 25: A paternity test comes back negative, proving that Bieber is not the father of Yeater’s baby.
Dec. 7: Bieber celebrates a year of romance with Selena Gomez by giving her a diamond ring.
Dec. 7: Justin in Toronto for a Christmas concert at Massey Hall. At the end, three TV special to close a great year for Biebermania.
