The most pirated TV shows of 2011
December 26, 2011
For the uninitiated, BitTorrent is a file-sharing tool that, when used with BitTorrent client software, lets users, or "peers," share very large files over a network. Users can download official BitTorrent software or opt for other front-end programs that use this protocol, such as BitComet, one of the most popular downloads on the Internet, according to C|Net's Download.com.
TorrentFreak has published the list of the top 10 most downloaded TV shows in 2011, and compared the download numbers to the estimated number of U.S. TV viewers.
Dexter topped the list this year, averaging 3.62 million downloads per episode. By comparison, the Showtime drama netted a U.S. TV audience of 2.19 million viewers per episode.
Number two was HBO's Game of Thrones, with 3.4 million downloads off BitTorrent sites. On television, about 3.04 million people tuned in to watch the show – or nearly 400,000 fewer people, says TorrentFreak.
But the numbers are dramatically different for the remaining seven spots in the Top 10 list. The third spot, for example, held by geeky sitcom Big Bang Theory, saw 3.09 million downloads compared to more than 15.98 million people who tuned in to watch it on television.
The complete list is available here.
Readers, do you ever download TV shows? If so, do you do it legitimately (such as on iTunes) or do you turn to BitTorrent sites?
